What is the difference between Thread Forming and Thread Cutting?

Thread Cutting screws actually "CUT" material away as the screw is driven into the material. See the TYPE 25 sample to the right.

Thread Forming screws do not remove any material. Rather, the process displaces the material to generate the thread form. Since the metal's structure is cold worked along the thread profile, the threads produced are generally stronger and have a smooth, burnished surface finish. See the TRILOBULAR sample to the right. Notice the Triangular shape at the end of the threads.
